Individuals and organizations involved in designing or preparing plans and specifications for construction projects require professional liability insurance to cover many of the exposures that their  work generates. "Architects and engineers professional and liability" coverage is the term commonly used to describe such insurance. (for the purposes of this section, the term "design professional liability insurance" will be used synonymously with "architects and engineers professional liability insurance.")

It should also be noted that the term "design professionals" encompasses more than simply those who prepare plans and specifications for structures. Designers of machinery and equipment-among others—could also fall within this category. However, for the purposes of this Section, the term "design professionals" will be used to refer to those associated with construction.
